Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company is established.

March 23, 1638

(OS-3/13) Originally the Military Company of Massachusetts, it holds its first election of officers. The oldest military company in the U.S. and the third oldest in the world (after the Pontifical Swiss Guard (1506) and Honourable Artillery Company of London (1537), the organization holds its first parade in June 1638.* Robert Keayne is the first commander. Its first headquarters are located in the Town House beginning in 1659, and it moves to its current home on the fourth floor of Faneuil Hall in 1746. The organization assumes its current name in 1737, and eventually becomes more of a social group, known for its lavish dinners and annual trips, and has not taken up arms since the Boston Police Strike of 1919. James Michael Curley subsequently describes it as “Ubiquitous in peace, invisible in war.”
